Gyotaku: Traditional Japanese Fish Printing Demonstration at Green Chalk
This event has already passed
Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey's Lighthouse District invites you to join us for a demonstration of Gyotaku, or traditional Japanese fish printing. Class fee is $15. To reserve a spot, please e-mail Green Chalk.
Today, we'll watch printmakers Barbara Furbush and Nora Partido demonstrate Gyotaku with real sardines from Monterey Bay! Originally used by fishermen to record their catches, Gyotaku has a become an art form in its own right. Inks or pigments are applied directly to the surface of a fish in order to capture images of its size, shape, surface texture, and delicate vein or scale patterns.
