Green Chalk Contemporary: Annual Brilliant Art Show

This event has already passed

Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey's Lighthouse District is proud to present the Green Chalk Annual Brilliant Art Show, January 4-26, which includes the work of 14 artists, many new to the Monterey Peninsula. All of them share an understanding about the complexities of life and art - a brilliance and intelligence which radiates through their work.

The Brilliant Art Show locally introduces the work of artists Enid Baxter Ryce and Mai Ryuno, as well exhibits new works by Lisa Solomon, Sharron Antholt, Seema Christie, Rebecca Clark, Lorenz Sonneban, Farley Gwazda, Francie Hester, Tamiko Kawata, Anne Marchand, Indira Morre, Noriyuki Sekiguchi, Jerry Takigawa, and Richard Whittaker.

Green Chalk Contemporary art gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 3:30pm-7pm. For more information, please phone Ami-Sue Lawless at 831-601-0534.

Enid Baxter Ryce's new pieces are inspired by rural roadside signs. Painted on linen with canola oil based paint, these works fluctuate between whimsy, longing, and impossible architectures. Perched on the edge of nowhere, these messages of hope and mystery call out to the loss, environmental collapse and displacement of the indigenous diaspora. Ryce, who works across multiple mediums, has previously exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution and the JP Getty, Armand Hammer, MOCA, Arnolofini, and Crocker Museums.

Mai Ryuno's work features the installation Dancing with Shadows, abstract images of airplanes as photograms, woodblock prints, and hundreds of tiny origami paper airplanes. The work, based on her memories of living near an airport and recalling the stories told to her of the airplanes and bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII, is part of a project concerned with effects of radiation following the disaster in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and the revitalization of the Tohoku area.
